SPRING IS IN THE AIR!

And so are all the pollens…

A fresh new season is upon us, and with it comes warmer weather, green buds and unfortunately for some, the sneezes! That’s right – it’s pollen time, and if you are one of the many unfortunate people out there who are susceptible to seasonal sinusitis, we feel your pain.

Jokes aside, pollen allergies can trigger disruptive and uncomfortable reactions for many, including itchy, watery eyes, a stuffy nose, coughs and sneezes, among other symptoms. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to manage your pollen allergy at this time of year:

  • Avoid going outside and keep windows and doors closed on dry, windy days.
  • Have a shower and change into a fresh set of clothes when you get in if you have been spending time outside.
  • Keep an eye on the daily pollen count in your area by visiting https://pollencount.co.za/ so that you can take extra precautions, such as wearing a mask when you go outside.
  • Rinse your nasal passages with saline solution to keep sinuses clear – ask your pharmacist what nasal irrigation kits are available.
  • Try an over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamine or nasal spray.
